Community college students, particularly those in large urban environments, face significant barriers regarding attending college and successfully completing their degree and certificate programs. Traditionally, colleges provide great academic support and financial aid, but barriers external to the classroom still impact current and potential students. These include reliable transportation, child care, employment while attending college and health care. DCCCD has recently embarked on providing support, through public/private partnerships, in those areas of concern. Projects regarding free (to the student) public transportation and data sharing projects with over 350 health and social service agencies will be discussed.
